Parent Visa

Are you looking to reunite with your children in Australia? The Parent Visa allows eligible parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia permanently.

What is the Australian Parent Visa?

The Parent Visa allows parents to live in Australia permanently. There are two primary types of Parent Visas: the Contributory Parent Visa and the Non-Contributory Parent Visa. Both visa types allow parents to join their children who are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, but they have different requirements, costs, and processing times.

Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

  • The Contributory Parent Visa is for parents who are willing to make a substantial contribution to the Australian government’s healthcare costs.
  • This visa requires a significant payment toward the costs of healthcare and welfare services, which helps to offset the burden of providing public services to the visa holder.
  • Processing times are generally faster compared to the Non-Contributory Parent Visa.
  • Key Requirements:
  • Your child must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • You must meet the balance of family test (at least half of your children must live in Australia or more children must live in Australia than any other country).
  • You need to demonstrate that you have sufficient health insurance and meet health and character requirements.

Non-Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 103)

  • The Non-Contributory Parent Visa is for parents who do not want to make a large financial contribution but are still seeking to reunite with their children in Australia.
  • This visa takes longer to process compared to the Contributory Parent Visa.
  • Key Requirements:
  • Similar to the Contributory Visa, you must meet the balance of family test.
  • You must demonstrate that you can meet health and character requirements.
  • The processing times for this visa can be very long (several years), and it can take up to 20 years or more to process, depending on the demand for parent visas and the specific circumstances.

Eligibility Requirements for Parent Visas

To be eligible for a Parent Visa (either Contributory or Non-Contributory), applicants must meet several key criteria:

  1. Sponsorship
  2. Your child in Australia must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen and must be willing to sponsor you for the visa.
  3. Balance of Family Test
  4. The balance of family test is a critical requirement. This means that at least half of your children must reside in Australia, or you must have more children in Australia than in any other country. The balance of family test is used to determine whether your relationship with your children in Australia is sufficient to justify the visa.
  5. Age Requirement
  6. Applicants must meet the age requirement, which is generally that you are of a certain age (usually 65 or older) to be eligible for the Parent Visa. However, the specific age requirements may differ depending on the visa subclass and whether you are applying for the Contributory or Non-Contributory visa.
  7. Health and Character Requirements
  8. You must undergo a medical examination and meet certain health standards.
  9. You must also meet character requirements by providing police clearances from all countries you have lived in for more than 12 months in the past 10 years.
  10. Financial Responsibility
  11. Parents must show that they have sufficient financial resources or support from their child to cover the costs of living and healthcare in Australia.
